Description
Alfalfa, also known as lucerne, is one of the oldest forage crops. The Persians were already feeding it to their horses as early as 500 BC. Today, alfalfa is often included as a structural component in numerous muesli mixes. However, due to its valuable nutritional properties, such as high-quality protein, beta-carotene, vitamins, and minerals, alfalfa is also of great importance in horse feeding when consumed on its own.
Alfalfa is an ideal concentrated feed, especially for breeding, sport, and young horses. A significant advantage of alfalfa is that it does not burden the horse's digestive tract and metabolism, as is the case with grain feed. Nevertheless, it provides sufficient energy.
Furthermore, the high calcium content of alfalfa helps to balance phosphorus-rich rations that result from a high-grain diet, thus restoring the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio. The calcium contained in alfalfa is an important building block for healthy bone growth in young horses and helps prevent bone damage in sport and performance horses.
Gentle drying and processing of the entire plant preserves nutrients and vitamins.
