Description

Scientific name: Fructus Cardui mariae pulv., Semen cardui mariae pulv., Silybum marianum

Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is of great importance to horses. Feeding milk thistle as a supplement can help detoxify the horse's body. Combining it with other bitter herbs (e.g., artichoke leaves or dandelion) can further enhance the beneficial properties of milk thistle. The most valuable component of milk thistle is silymarin. Silymarin is primarily found in the hard-shelled, shiny black fruits of the milk thistle plant.

Milk thistle seeds contain valuable nutrients:

  • Unsaturated fatty acids (linoleic acid)
  • Vitamin E
  • Bitter substances
  • Essential oils
  • Silymarin (a complex belonging to the flavonoids)

Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is a beautiful thistle plant with purple flowers. It is primarily found in the Mediterranean region. Large fields can be found in Austria (Waldviertel), Hungary, Germany (Westerwald), and also in cultivation areas in North Africa, Argentina, Venezuela, and China.
