Our advice
The girth should always sit a full hand's width behind the horse's elbow. This prevents the girth from rubbing against the elbow during movement. In this position, the girth also rests on the sternum, which can better absorb the pressure of the girth than the soft belly. If the girth lies behind the sternum, it can be uncomfortable for the horse and restrict its breathing.
The girth should only ever be fastened tightly enough to ensure the saddle sits stably and securely on the horse. However, it must not restrict the horse's breathing or compress its belly. As a rule, one or two fingertips should still fit under the fastened girth.
